Louisville, Ky.—Our Lady of Peace, part of KentuckyOne Health, mental health professionals will host free depression screenings on October 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 2020 Newburg Road. The free screenings are planned to coincide with the annual awareness campaign, National Depression Screening Day.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), approximately 14.8 million American adults, or about 6.7 percent of the U.S. adult population suffer from depression every year. Sadly, only one third of these sufferers recognize the symptoms of their depression and are diagnosed and treated.

“Many people feel that their sadness is just part of normal life and haven’t considered they may be experiencing symptoms of depression,” said Jennifer Nolan, president, Our Lady of Peace.  “By offering these free screenings, we hope to reach those who wouldn’t otherwise seek help.”

The purpose of the screening is to detect the presence or absence of depression. Each registered adult will privately meet with a clinician, and be asked to answer a series of questions. Once responses are recorded, the clinician will share the results with the person, answer any questions and suggest if a referral for further evaluation is needed. The screening, which will last about 30 minutes, is not a substitute for professional diagnoses.

Depression is a serious mental illness that without treatment, can sometimes lead to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Often depression co-exists with other medical conditions which can complicate the situation. However, once diagnosed, most cases can be treated effectively with a combination of medicine and psychotherapy.

Interested individuals can register for this free event by calling 502-451-3330.
