The Cardiac Transplant Program
The Cardiac Transplant (CT) program offers heart transplantation along with pre- and post-transplant patient care. The multidisciplinary Heart Transplant Team consists of cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, transplant nurse coordinators, psychiatrists, social workers, financial coordinators, medical consultants and administrators who work closely with the operating room, critical care and medical-surgical units at Jewish Hospital.
Our trained team of professionals recognizes your heart transplant is not simply a surgery, but rather a process for which to prepare both physically and emotionally. Consultants will work closely with you through the entire process to determine your eligibility for a ventricular assist device (VAD), ensure you stay healthy and strong as you await your transplant, educate you and help manage your fears and uncertainties associated with such a monumental procedure. And when it’s over, our team is right there to provide you all the care needed for recovery, as well as resources to help you maintain your quality of life.
Patient medical care during the entire transplant process occurs at Jewish Hospital, a private 462-bed tertiary care and teaching facility located in the Louisville Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky. Patients who are accepted as heart transplant candidates are listed with the Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) as well as nationally with the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
Who is a candidate for a heart transplant?
The ideal heart transplant candidate is a person with end-stage heart disease, but with all other major organs in good shape and functioning efficiently.
Past medical history, including previous transplants, smoking, alcohol, drug abuse or difficulty in following medical advice will also affect a patient’s potential candidacy for transplant. All of these issues are considered for each patient to ensure that the best decision is made, and a team of experts will work together to determine whether or not heart transplant is an option.
