Program Features and Services

Returning to daily life after a brain injury can be overwhelming, confusing and difficult. The NeuroRehab Program is designed to provide the most realistic environment possible to assist patients in re-learning skills and regaining independence. Our services cover a broad spectrum in order to address each and every need our patients may have.  These services include:

Individual Therapy

Individual therapies allow each patient to address specific goals and may include: psychology, occupational therapy, speech/language therapy, physical therapy and case management.

Therapeutic Groups

Group therapy provides an opportunity to relate to other individuals who are going through similar circumstances. Group therapy reinforces skills and activities addressed in individual therapy. Some of the groups offered include: Goals, Fitness, Reasoning, Executive Skills, Life Skills, Vision, Lunch, Brain Injury Education and Adjustment, Cognition, Vocational Skills and Pragmatics.  For more detailed information on each group, please view the NeuroRehab Program Handbook.

Case Management Support Services

Case management serves as a coordinator of care between the individual, family, treatment team and payer source.  The case manager is a health professional who advocates for essential services, analyzes fiscal benefits, advises the individual and family, and monitors the use of resources.

Cognitive Skill Building and Retraining

Difficulties with memory, organization and focus are common after brain injury. Our speech and occupational therapists address retraining and strategy use to improve cognition/thinking skills.

Speech and Language Retraining

Difficulty with communication and comprehension are also common after neurologic injury. Our speech and language pathologists address the communication skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Physical Therapy

Trauma to the body and/or to the brain can result in physical injuries or impairments. These impairments can be addressed by our physical therapist and occupational therapists to assist with improvement of movement, strength, coordination, balance, sensation and flexibility.

Psychological Support Services

The NeuroRehab Program offers on-site psychological support services to both patients and their caregivers.  Life changes that may occur as a result of neurological injury take time and support for you and your family to adjust.  Our psychologist will work with you and your loved ones to educate and assist you through this challenging time.  We also provide neuropsychological services in conjunction with Frazier Rehab Downtown.

Visual-Perceptual Treatment

Individuals with brain injury can have difficulties with perception and visual motor skills.  Our occupational therapists will assess and treat visual difficulties related to neurological injury as part of your treatment in the NeuroRehab Program.  If more advanced treatment is warranted, we will make additional referrals to a vision specialist.  An optometrist specializing in Vision Therapy maintains an office at NeuroRehab, allowing us to incorporate this treatment into your daily routine if appropriate.

Home Evaluations and Home Management

The occupational therapist may suggest a home evaluation to make sure you are safe and functioning as best as possible in your home.  Following the home visit, the therapist will provide recommendations that may include physical changes to your home or alternative ways of completing tasks that may make things easier for you.

Preparation for Independent Living

In addition to evaluating your home and maximizing your abilities there, our team works with you to give you the tools you need to live as independently as possible.  In an effort to provide therapy in a realistic environment, we incorporate everyday activities into our therapy days, including kitchen tasks, computer skills and other real world experiences.  Our therapists will also accompany you on community outings such as: choosing and purchasing a memory-planning device, grocery shopping, dining out, taking public transportation, banking and recreational/leisure activities.  Individuals are encouraged to employ skills they have been working on in therapy such as social skills, money management skills, map-reading skills, problem solving skills and safety awareness.

School Re-Entry and IEP/504 Collaboration

For our students, we work with the school to set up home-bound services while you are out of school and begin the process of transitioning back into school when that is deemed appropriate.  The team develops specific recommendations and provides them to the school so the school has a comprehensive understanding of the student’s needs.  The team educates parents and students on services available in the school system and also provides educational information to the school regarding the effects of brain injury and common changes that can occur to help them successfully meet the needs of the student.  Often, an IEP (Individualized Education Plan), a legally binding plan specific to each student that ensures optimum services and care, is set in place.

Vocational Services, including On-Site Work Evaluations and Work Re-Entry

The NeuroRehab program is committed to assisting individuals in achieving the highest level of functioning possible, and therefore helping people get back to work.  Some of the services offered include: work-site evaluation, job analysis, job trials, assessment of work skills, identification of modifications or adaptations needed to return you to work, incorporation of strategies, on-site job training and job coaching.  With your permission, we will work with you and your employer to identify your needs and make the adjustments necessary to get you back to work.  The NeuroRehab program works closely with Kentucky and Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation to provide the best quality of care possible.

Prevention/Wellness Education

Your health and highest functioning ability are of the utmost importance to us.  After a neurologic injury or illness, there are often lifestyle changes or recommendations that are important to be aware of in order to maximize recovery.  Our entire team is focused on helping you understand and implement these changes or recommendations.

Driving Skills Training

Often after a neurological injury or illness, individuals may have both physical and cognitive changes that may limit their ability to drive safely.  When your doctor and therapy team deem that you are ready to begin the driving process, we will work with you to return you to driving again as soon as possible.  Our services include a pre-driving evaluation, behind-the-wheel assessment, individualized driver’s training program, a vehicle and equipment assessment, and adaptive equipment training.  These services are offered in cooperation with our Frazier Rehab clinic located on Newburg Road in Louisville.

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion Treatment

A mild traumatic brain injury can begin with something that seems relatively simple, like a sports concussion or a fall.  Often undiagnosed, mild brain injuries can cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, irritability, lack of focus and poor problem solving skills.  People can go months and even years before they seek treatment, but NeuroRehab can help.  For more information on mild brain injury, click here.
