Course Description: Review of evaluation and management of amputee residual limb complications
           Course Objectives:
          - Expand knowledge of etiology
          - Expand knowledge of pathogenesis
          - Expand knowledge of evaluation
          - Expand knowledge of amputee skin and wound complications
  • Initial Prosthetic Gait Training – Getting Started
Course Description: Explore the initial prosthetic gait training physical therapy session for the new amputee, from introducing the patient/client to the prosthesis to pre-gait training. Both above-knee and below-knee prostheses will be reviewed, including suspension mechanisms, methods of donning/doffing, and operation
          Course Objectives:
          - Describe different styles of suspension mechanisms for both Above Knee and Below
Knee prostheses and how to don them.
          - Identify weight-bearing areas and physical mechanics of Above Knee and Below Knee prostheses.
          - Progress a patient through pre-gait sequence including weight shifting, stance control, and swing control.
  • Breakout 3: Occupational Therapy Role in Evaluation and Treatment of Amputees
          Shana Azevedo, OTR/L
Course Description: Defining and discussing OT focus for evaluation and treatment of amputee patients. Topics to include ROM, skin integrity, sensation, positioning, pre-prosthetic and prosthetic training.
          Course Objectives:
          - Understand etiology of amputation as it relates to OT evaluation.
          - Understand basic areas to assess in evaluations and treatments for amputee patients.
          - Understand and demonstrate various techniques for enhancing patient’s functional independence both with and without prosthetic devices.
  • Gait Assessment and Common Gait Defects for Both the Below Knee and Above Knee Amputee
Breakout Session 2:00pm - 3:00pm
  • Advanced Prosthetic Gait Training – Progressing and Perfecting Gait
Course Description: Explore physical therapy interventions for new and experienced amputees who are already ambulating with a single prosthesis or bilateral prostheses. Topics will focus on high-level balance, stair training, unlevel surfaces, and microprocessor knees.
          Course Objectives:
          - Describe several balance activities tailored specifically for amputees.
          - Understand different techniques for stair training using mechanical vs. microprocessor knees.
          - Describe advantages and limitations of microprocessor knees.
  • Therapeutic Activities for Amputees
Course Description: Activities and exercises for the treatment of pre-prosthetic and prosthetic users including upper extremity and lower extremity amputees to increased independence with B/IADLs.
          Course Objectives
          - Participants will be able to determine proper positioning and strengthening exercises for upper and lower extremity amputees in acute and post acute settings.
          - Participants will understand various alternative techniques for completion of ADLs with and without upper and lower extremity prosthetics.
  • Problem solving during prosthetic training for fit, donning and pain issues in both below knee and above knee sockets
