Preparing for A Sleep Study

What is a Sleep Study?

A sleep study, or polysomnogram, is an electro-physiologic procedure that records a variety of bodily functions during sleep including electrical activity of the brain, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rate, breathing and blood oxygen levels.

What should I bring to the Sleep Lab?

You should be as comfortable as possible.  You may bring your own pillow, blanket or whatever will help you better relax.  Also, bring something comfortable to wear while sleeping.  You will also need to bring your completed Sleep Lab Questionnaire and EPWORTH Scale which will be provided to you prior to the sleep study appointment.

How long does the test last?

The study runs for six hours after you are hooked up to the equipment.  Setup can take 30-45 minutes or more in order to get everything connected properly. A trained sleep technologist explains all of the recording sensors during application.

How long does the test take and to receive results?

After being connected to the required testing equipment, the test runs for six hours.  When the test is completed, and we remove the equipment you may prepare to leave.  Patients usually leave between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.  The reading physician should contact you with the results within 72 hours following your visit.

What about my medications?

You should continue to take any medications currently prescribed by your physician.  Please provide a list of these medications to give to your Sleep Lab technician.

What if I am diabetic?

If you are diabetic and require your sugar checked, make sure you bring all testing supplies and items needed to maintain blood sugar. You are required to manage your blood sugar throughout the entire test.

What should I do for preparation?

Please refrain from napping on the day of the study.  We want you to get as much sleep as possible during the test.  Caffeine should not be consumed after 4 p.m. on the day of your test.  Please do not use lotions, oils or wear make-up.
