American Heart Association Courses

The American Heart Association (AHA) offers several certification and renewal courses available to nurses that cover the essential procedures, techniques and guidelines used daily in a healthcare setting

A range of course are available and cover Cardiac Life Support, CPR, heart attack and stroke risk factors and pediatric life support. The courses offered to nurses include:

BLS/CPR Course

The BLS/CPR initial/provider and renewal courses offered follow the American Heart Association guidelines and curriculum and cover a variety of vital information

The course covers risk factors of cardiovascular disease and stroke, signs and symptoms of a heart attack and stroke, performing CPR on adults, children and infants as well as training on how to remove a foreign body airway obstruction. 

Both initial/provider and renewal courses are taught annually at all facilities. The course fee is a $15.00 deposit, which is returned at the end of the course, and includes a loaned student textbook for study purposes. There is a $3.00 charge for the certification card payable after successful completion of the course.

Please note that some facilities offer a BLS/CPR renewal course on the Heartcode computer system.  If interested, follow the same enrollment procedures as described above, typing in the keyword CPR Heartcode.

ACLS Course

The two-day American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider course is taught in a classroom setting and designed for the healthcare provider who either directs or participates in the resuscitation of a patient. 

The course will concentrate on skills enhancement in the treatment of arrest and peri-arrest patients and will be demonstrated through active participation in a series of simulated cardiopulmonary cases.  It is important that students have prior knowledge of basic rhythm identification in order to successfully complete this course. 

The course fee is a $45.00 deposit that includes a loaned student textbook or $35.00 to purchase the student textbook.  The deposit is returned at the conclusion of the course. There is a $5.00 charge for the certification card payable after successful completion of the course.

PALS Course

The two-day American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course aids the pediatric healthcare provider in developing the knowledge and skills necessary to efficiently and effectively manage critically ill infants and children, resulting in improved outcomes.

Skills taught in the course include recognition and treatment of infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest; the systematic approach to pediatric assessment; effective respiratory management; defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion; intraosseous access and fluid bolus administration; and effective resuscitation team dynamics.

Classes are offered periodically at most facilities and recommended for nurses who work in any area where children could potentially be patients. 

The course fee is a $45.00 deposit that includes a loaned student textbook or $35.00 to purchase the student textbook.  The deposit is returned at the conclusion of the course. There is a $5.00 charge for the certification card payable after successful completion of the course.
