Movement Disorders Program

Through a unique partnership between Frazier Rehab Institute and the University of Louisville Division of Movement Disorders, the Movement Disorders Program at Frazier Rehab and Neuroscience Center provides a comprehensive clinical approach to care for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders. This collaboration brings together world-class research with innovative therapeutic care and education that has been recognized by the National Parkinson Foundation as a Center of Excellence.

National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence

The highest designation awarded by the National Parkinson Foundation, the Center of Excellence provides national leadership in research, clinical care and outreach education for Parkinson’s disease.

The U of L Division of Movement Disorders is the first program, and currently the only one, in Kentucky to earn the Center of Excellence designation. Because of the unique collaboration between U of L and Frazier Rehab Institute, the program is able to provide a clinical practice that includes neurologic evaluation and care and rehab therapy. The Division has a wide range of on-going research and strong ties to local support organizations to provide community outreach.

As a Center of Excellence, the Division serves as the place in the region for people with Parkinson’s disease, their caregivers and family, and health care providers to turn to for the most up-to-date information, advanced research, specialized services and community support.

Standard of Care

The Movement Disorders Program is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary program that brings all disciplines together to provide treatment – all in one location. Benefiting from the Center of Excellence designation in Parkinson’s disease, the program follows this same high standard of care for all of the diagnoses it serves. Patients in the program receive expert clinical and therapeutic care from movement disorder and rehab specialists, while having access to leading-edge research opportunities.

The program is directed by Irene Litvan, M.D., who is the Raymond Lee Lebby endowed professor of Parkinson Disease Research at the University of Louisville and the director of its Division of Movement Disorders. Dr. Litvan and her team work diligently to help patients function, as well as possible with their disease, while searching for a cure.
