Senior Encephalopathy Rehab Program

Frazier Rehab Institute’s Senior Encephalopathy Rehab Program (SERP) is the only comprehensive, interdisciplinary program in the region for the treatment of adults with encephalopathy who have noticed sudden or increased confusion.  The confusion is usually secondary to other conditions, including post-operative encephalopathies and toxic or metabolic conditions.  The program is individualized to restore the patient’s cognitive abilities and motor functions, including gait stability and ambulation. An inpatient stay is typically necessary with outpatient follow-up for continued treatment gains.

The number of encephalopathy patients is increasing in the acute care setting as our population ages.  SERP is another example of Frazier Rehab Institute’s commitment to meeting the needs of the aging population within our community.

The Program

Upon admission, each patient is evaluated under the supervision of a physician.  Physical and cognitive functioning is evaluated to identify aspects of encephalopathy for treatment planning.

Patients are evaluated by a speech, occupational and physical therapist.  Recreational therapists are consulted to provide stimulating activities between therapy sessions to reinforce functional gains.

Involvement of family members is encouraged.  Family member education and teaching is provided as appropriate to the patient’s discharge needs.
